10 Interfaith Celeb Relationships
My parents raised me as a Catholic. Growing up I was a “good” Catholic schoolgirl— I never missed a day at church or Sunday school. Nowadays, I’m more of a Cat-holic than Catholic. I haven’t been practicing that much because of my age and the fact that masses are now broadcasted on television, which allows me to instill some faith onto my kitties while sitting at home.
It’s no longer surprising to see couples of all shapes, sizes, race, and gender walking around town, yet religion is still a sensitive issue. What puzzles me is when people (especially in Hollywood) blame clashing faiths for their breakups. Let me use my old lady wisdom on you, children: True love has no boundaries. One of my cats is a scientologist, but the other kitties still include him in their prayers.
Here are 10 Hollywood couples that looked past faith to be the one they loved (and still love, in a few cases.)
Idina Menzel & Taye Diggs
I am a huge fan of Idina Menzel. I didn’t like “Frozen” because I thought Elsa was mean to her baby sister, but the kitties and I have a soft spot for “Let It Go.” Indina was also amazing as Elphaba on “Wicked”. Aside from defying gravity on stage, Indina also defied critics of her interracial and interfaith marriage to her ex-husband, Taye Diggs. The couple met during the production of hit Broadway musical, “Rent” back in 1995.
Idina is Jewish, while Taye is Christian. They let those haters hate for the ten years that they were together. They separated in 2013 and quietly divorced the following year—with no unresolved legal issues between the two of them. Together, they have a 5-year old son named Walker Nathaniel.
Oh Hollywood, your reason for criticizing people has no bounds, I see.
Madonna & Guy Ritchie
Madonna became famous after her controversial hits in the 80’s, including “Material Girl” and “Like a Virgin.” On the other hand, her ex-husband, Guy, is known for creating films revolving around the subject of crime.
Madonna is another fabulous older lady. She’s on her way to becoming the next me. The only difference is that I have a horde of cats, while she has a horde of boy toys. I mean, Guy Ritchie is ten years younger than her and they stayed together for eight years. Ritchie had a circumcision in order to please Madonna and transferred to Kabbalah, a religion that’s quite similar to the Jewish faith.
His transfer to the religion didn’t actually cause the split. According to reports, it was mainly because he didn’t want to share Madonna with the world and he had doubts about her adopting an African child.
Khloe Kardashian & French Montana
Well, since there’s a Kardashian on this list, you perfectly know why she’s publicly known—she’s one of the daughters of Robert Kardashian Sr. aka OJ Simpson’s lawyer. As for French Montana, he’s a rapper under Diddy’s record label, Bad Boy Records.
I am a religious watcher of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, and my kitties love watching me play the Kardashian game on my phone. My favorite is Khloe, because she reminds me of my younger self. She was raised Christian but her current boyfriend, French Montana, is Muslim. I have no issues with that. Heck, I was even delighted when she revealed that they abstained from sex during Ramadan. It only means that Khloe respects her beau’s faith and doesn’t let it affect their relationship. However, they split before 2014 ended. It seemed messy, which means that Khloe is welcome to drop by my home and get some comfort from my kitties.
Jennifer Lopez & Marc Anthony
Of course, how could we forget these two? Jennifer Lopez got her big break in the movie, “Selena”, a biopic about the famous Tejano singer. Marc Anthony, on the other hand, is well known for his Latin ballads. After being friends for a long-time, they started dating in 2004.
They used to be Latin America’s royal couple and then they had beautiful twins, which only made them more awesome. Sadly, they reportedly divorced because JLo insisted that her twins go to a special school for Scientologists. That didn’t sit well with the Latino crooner, because he wasn’t really a fan of the religion. I’ve asked my cats to Google Marc Anthony’s religion, but nothing has come up.
Fred Armisen & Elisabeth Moss
An 8-month long marriage? My, my people from Hollywood! This is what happens when people begin to think that everything is disposable. I enjoy both Mad Men and Saturday Night Live (particularly their sketches about cat adoption commercials) but I did not enjoy their union at all. It was short-lived and blamed for Elisabeth’s affiliation and dedication with Scientology– It doesn’t help that Fred’s an atheist, too. That’s all too common, just ask Tom Cruise.
Fred has also admitted on Howard Stern that he gets too caught up during the beginning stages of a relationship (hence the quick marriage) and that he was a terrible husband. Oh, boy. You’re good with impressions on SNL, Fred, but you can’t seem to make an impression of a good husband. Maybe he’s just not meant to get tied down.
Tom Cruise & Nicole Kidman
We all know Tom Cruise from “Risky Business” and “Top Gun”—he’s that guy in Hollywood that seems to be in box-office successes 90% of the time. As for Nicole, the Australian beauty is probably most recognized for her role in “Moulin Rouge” as Satine.
These two were married for eleven years, which is considered to be a lifetime in Hollywood years. I remember that day when Nicole got her divorce with Tom finalized, she looked so happy in the paparazzi photos. There were so many reports that Nicole, a Roman Catholic, felt imprisoned by Tom’s Scientology views. It’s rumored that she actually had to “audition” to become Tom’s wife, and that their kids were brainwashed against her after the divorce.
Oh, this was simply just a recipe for disaster from the beginning. But wait! There’s more…
Tom Cruise & Katie Holmes
We have another entry for Tom Cruise with yet another Roman Catholic. Katie Holmes was first recognized for her role in “Dawson’s Creek” as Joey Potter. Katie was in a long-term relationship with actor, Chris Klein—until they broke up and Tom swooped in and wooed her into marriage.
I applaud Katie’s bravery with going public about her divorce with Tom. She did it like a cat– stealthily, knowing that Scientologists have their way of instilling fear to those who attempt to break free from the church. Heck, even Tom admits that Katie did it to protect their child.
Tom, honey, if your name appears twice on a list about being in a relationship with religious differences, you may have to cut back on the enthusiasm. Or maybe it’s the women you choose? Time to switch to Roman Catholicism? What do you think?
Katy Perry & Russell Brand
Katy Perry was first recognized for her controversial songs, “I Kissed A Girl” and “Ur So Gay”. So of course, she went for a controversial partner in the form of Russell Brand, a British comedian who is known for his past drug problems and run-ins with the law.
Oh, these two! I like Russell’s dirty humor and my cats adore Katy’s music so much. Their marriage lasted for 14 months—something that shocked me, honestly. A womanizer being able to commit for that long? Amazing!
Katy’s parents were both Protestant Christian pastors who were a bit skeptical about her union with Brand, a Hindu. Katy and Russell’s relationship had a lot of controversy from the beginning and up until the end—mostly because of Russell’s way of asking for a divorce: via text.
Technology is ruining marriages. People from my generation are in the news for mourning the loss of their long-time partner. People from the new generation are in the news for asking for a divorce via SMS.
David Bowie & Inman
Ziggy Stardust and a goddess! Inman and David Bowie have been together since 1992. They’re an interracial and inter-religious couple. Beautiful Iman is a Muslim and David Bowie considers himself to an “almost atheist”. I don’t know what he means by that, but whatever he’s doing, it’s working for him.
See, this a good example of a couple who prevailed despite their differences. This should be your goal, children. Before my kitties, my goal was to be with David Bowie. But I’ve made peace with that never happening.
David and Inman are still going strong after all these years and still look very much in love whenever they’re pictured together on the red carpet.
Mark Zuckerberg & Priscilla Chan
Billionaires are getting younger now, huh? Even though they only got married in 2012, Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan have been together since 2003—pre-dating the conception of Facebook by a year.
Mark was raised Jewish, but has admitted that he turned Atheist during his adult years. Not much is known about Priscilla, aside from her being a doctor and being raised by parents who worked 18 hours a day in Boston. They’re a pretty low-key couple that doesn’t like to be flashy about their lifestyle. Heck, even their wedding was said to be pretty normal and not extravagant—something that’s not usually seen from billionaires.
That’s good, Mark and Priscilla—continue to keep your private life private so your marriage can survive. I need Zuckerberg to be in tiptop shape because my cats become hostile whenever Facebook goes down—Lord knows what they’d do if Facebook suddenly went under!
