Kris, Caitlyn (Bruce), Kourtney, Kim, Khloe, Rob, Kendall and Kylie – who hasn’t heard of the Kardashians and the Jenners? With their own reality television series launched in 2007 with the debut of Keeping Up with the Kardashians on the E! network, the Kardashians have become a powerful brand and have proven their influence beyond the realm of television and into the world of fashion, endorsement deals, social media and much, much more.
Much like winning the lottery is said to bring new family members out of the woodwork looking for a penny or two, there are dozens of people who would give anything to befriend the Kardashians simply to become famous. Of course, many have tried and many have learned the hard way that getting too close to the Kardashians can lead to terrible luck. Between professional and personal relationships, the Kardashians have essentially become black widows to those who come near, family member or stranger, friend or foe!
Who has suffered the most since meeting the Kardashians and are the sisters really considered the black widows of Hollywood? From singers, publicists and models to football stars, basketball greats and even family members themselves, join us as we prove the “Kardashian Kurse” lives on with these 20 shocking stories of lives ruined by the Kardashians. Are you ready for the juicy details because we sure are!
#20 – Jonathan Cheban
Perhaps one of the lesser known names on our list, Jonathan Cheban has tried to piggyback on the fame of the Kardashian family for years after first appearing on Keeping Up with the Kardashians as a friend of Kim and Courtney. Continuing to maintain his socialite status through his high profile friendship, the New York native has obviously come a long way since getting his start in public relations and launching his own firm with Simon Huck (but more on him later).
Spending time with the Kardashian’s might have boosted Cheban’s fame but it hasn’t done much for his success. In 2010, Cheban starred in his own reality show, The Spin Crowd, with high hopes of becoming the next television star especially with Kim as the show’s executive producer. Unfortunately, no one cared enough to tune in and Cheban’s show tanked after one season. Launching a clothing line and opening a restaurant, Cheban joined the 2016 Celebrity Big Brother house in the UK only to prove his flair for the dramatic when he caved under the pressure and left after six days.
#19 – Reggie Bush
One of the best college football players of all time at the University of Southern California, 2005 Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush was drafted in the second round of the 2006 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints. Spending four years with the Saints and winning a 2010 Super Bowl title, the star running back went on to play for the Miami Dolphins, Detroit Lions and the San Francisco 49ers but not before making headlines for his personal life when he was spotted with Kim Kardashian on his arm.
Introduced by former USC quarterback Matt Leinart at the 2007 ESPY Awards, Bush and Kardashian dated from 2007 to July 2009 before rekindling their romance in September and dating again until March 2010. New to the NFL at the time, Bush’s relationship with Kardashian proved to be the worst medicine for his career as his abilities on the field suffered and left many Saints fans to call him cursed. By the time of their breakup, Bush had already used up the majority of his prime and was left with three decent seasons before fading into football obscurity.
#18 – Jonathan Jaxson
Lucky for him, it has been nearly five years since the world last heard the name of Jonathan Jaxson. The self-proclaimed publicist (which was also disputed at the time) became a household name in Hollywood headlines when he claimed that the marriage between Kim Kardashian and NBA star Kris Humphries was a complete farce to make money. At the time, Jaxson publicly said, “It was obvious that it was staged…There were contracts already in place for E! to film it. Everything was written down.”
Despite the coincidence of the release of her newest fragrance, a two-part television special and the opening of the Kardashian Khaos store in Las Vegas (not to mention a 72-day marriage to Humphries), Kardashian denied Jaxon’s allegations were true and filed suit. Settling out of court, Jaxson was forced to publish an apology letter that read, “I wanted to apologize publicly to Kim Kardashian for any confusion that I may have caused by the personal statements I made…” Apology or not, Jaxson was forever blacklisted from Hollywood at the hands of the “Kardashian Curse.”
#17 – Amber Rose
First turning heads in an advertisement for Louis Vuitton featuring Kanye West’s newest line of sneakers, fashion designer and model Amber Rose had already caught the attention of West thanks to her appearance in Ludacris’ 2008 “What Them Girls Like” music video. Shortly after, West and Rose began dating only to call it quits two years later when West met Kim Kardashian and Rose locked arms with rapper Wiz Khalifa. With her former boyfriend tying the knot with Hollywood’s biggest socialite, Rose has spent the last few years deflecting non-stop questions about her relationship with Kanye.
With the media desperate for juicy details, Rose managed to bite her tongue until just over a year ago when she made comments about the family and questioned Kim and Kanye’s relationship. Ultimately launching a feud with one of the most powerful celebrity couples, the two sides seem to have buried the hatchet but Rose will forever be linked with the Kardashians since Kim’s little sister Khloe came to her defense and called Rose a “whore.” Talk about family drama!
#16 – Rashad McCants
Following a similar fate as Reggie Bush, Rashad McCants had an outstanding basketball career in college at the University of North Carolina before everything seemingly went downhill. A standout star who helped UNC win the 2005 National Championship title, McCants was drafted 14th overall in the 2005 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves where he took his position as the team’s shooting guard until 2009. Still in the NBA and preparing for a move to the Sacramento Kings, change was on the horizon for McCants when he started dating Khloe Kardashian.
With their relationship showcased on Keeping Up with the Kardashians, McCants’ skills on the court paled in comparison to his celebrity girlfriend as he was portrayed as a terrible person and boyfriend after cheating on the reality star. To make matters worse, McCants was also wrapping up his NBA career and was relegated to playing abroad in lower leagues before hanging his sneakers up altogether in 2015. Unable to catch a break, McCants is currently facing troubles from his days at UNC in regards to the authenticity of his academics. Who knows, he might just get an A for effort.
#15 – Simon Huck
Having already visited Jonathan Cheban at number 20, next on our list is Cheban’s business partner and fellow socialite, Canada native Simon Huck. Opening Command PR in New York City alongside Cheban, Huck has also suffered from the Kardashian curse after making several appearances alongside his business partner on Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Huck even jumped on the Cheban and Kardashian bandwagon when he appeared on Cheban’s E! network reality show, The Spin Crowd.
With the show canceled after its first season and no real future as a celebrity, it has been years since Huck has been seen in the spotlight with his most recent television appearance dating back to 2013 on Kourtney and Kim Take Miami. However, not all has been lost as Huck finally smartened up and bought Cheban’s share of Command PR in 2013 making himself principal owner and CEO of the small public relations firm. Perhaps working behind the scenes will bring him greater success!
#14 – Miles Austin
Failing to make the 2006 NFL Draft out of college at Monmouth University, Miles Austin made a huge splash when he signed as a free agent with the Dallas Cowboys. Despite his record-setting college career as a wide receiver, Austin didn’t get much playing time with the Cowboys until his fourth season in 2009 when he had 1,320 receiving yards and an incredible 11 touchdowns. Austin followed up with an outstanding season in 2010 that would serve as his last hurrah finishing with over 1,000 receiving yards as his focus on the field shifted to his new girlfriend, Kim Kardashian.
Dating Kim only briefly before her 72-day marriage to Kris Humphries in 2011, Austin has been floating around the league ever since playing with the Cleveland Browns and Philadelphia Eagles without making too many waves on the field. Austin married his college sweetheart Stacy Sydio in March 2014 and, while there hasn’t been any lingering drama, it’s undeniable that this former NFL star has fallen by the wayside since calling it quits with the famous Kardashian clan. Coincidence, we think not!
#13 – French Montana
Born in Morocco as Karim Kharbouch, French Montana emigrated to the United States with his family when he was 13 years old. Montana made his debut as a rapper in 2007 and eventually signed with Bad Boy Records and Maybach Music Group before releasing his first studio album, Excuse My French, in 2013. Known for his frequent collaborations, some of the 31-year-old’s biggest hits include “Off the Rip,” “Pop That” and “Ain’t Worried About Nothin.”
Despite the highly publicized drama surrounding the nasty divorce between Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom, Montana went against his better judgment and began dating Khloe in 2014. The relationship quickly became too much for Montana to handle when he said that he had finally “had enough” of the love triangle. Friends close to Montana said, “French is so tired of Khloe’s games and it’s fair to say that he’s been painted as a real jerk ever since they first hooked up.” Of course, it’s impossible to be the good guy when the Kardashians always come out smelling like a rose.
#12 – Chad Hurley
What’s the first website that you think of when it comes to watching and sharing online videos? YouTube was founded in 2005 by Pennsylvania native Chad Hurley and his two colleagues at PayPal, Steve Chen and Jawid Karem. By 2006, Hurley and Chen were more than happy to sell when Google offered $1.65 billion for the site. Back to the drawing board, the 39-year-old Hurley knocked it out of the park once again when he launched MixBit, a popular video editing site for smartphones.
Though he hasn’t had his life destroyed by the Kardashians, Hurley definitely understands the Kardashian wrath after making a minor but costly mistake. So what exactly did he do? Hurley secretly recorded a clip of Kanye West proposing to Kim Kardashian at the AT&T Park in San Francisco, which he immediately posted on MixBit for millions to see. Kardashian and West quickly responded and filed suit, leaving Hurley to fork over $440,000. Bringing in over $4.5 million per year, the mistake was merely pocket change for Hurley but was undoubtedly a huge waste of time.
#11 – Kris Humphries
Rising to fame as a 10-year-old competitive swimmer second only to a young Michael Phelps, Kris Humphries left his record-breaking freestyle behind at the age of 12 in exchange for a career in basketball. Making a name for himself on the hardwoods at the University of Minnesota, Humphries was drafted 14th overall in the 2004 NBA Draft by the Utah Jazz. Spending two seasons with the Jazz, he went on to play for the Toronto Raptors and Dallas Mavericks before making headlines off the court in October 2010 thanks to his relationship with Kim Kardashian.
Engaged to Kim by May 2011, Humphries continued to be a star power forward and center averaging over 10 points and 10 rebounds per game. Behind the scenes, however, his personal life was in complete turmoil as his marriage crumbled after 72 days leaving people like Jonathan Jaxson to call him a fraud. Amid lengthy divorce proceedings and transfers to teams like the Boston Celtics, Washington Wizards, Phoenix Suns and the Atlanta Hawks, Humphries had one more stellar season but hasn’t been the same player since having his dirty laundry aired for the world to see.
#10 – Kanye West
Long before taking the stage, Kanye West was considered one of the best producers in the music industry known for working with artists like Alicia Keys and Jay Z. Stepping up to the microphone and releasing his debut album, The College Dropout, in 2004, West has gone on to release record-breaking albums such as Late Registration and Graduation while building his reputation as one of the most eccentric and outspoken personalities in the industry. Though still considered among the best minds in the history of rap music, things have been different for West since Kim Kardashian came into the picture in 2012.
In a relationship defined by The New York Times as a “historic blizzard of celebrity,” Kanye and Kim were engaged in October 2013 and married in May 2014 at a private ceremony in Florence. Italy. Having since taken the spotlight for his egotism and political opinions, many believe that Kanye has lost much of his credibility in addition to millions of fans. Now with two children and claims that he is over $50 million in debt, Kanye may still be on the inside of the Kardashian world but he has definitely fallen off the rails in terms of being normal and respected.
#9 – Ray J
With a family tree including famed singer and actress Brandy as his sister and Snoop Dogg as his first cousin, William Ray Norwood, Jr. undoubtedly had music in his genes when he took the stage as Ray J in the mid-1990s. Releasing his first album Everything You Want in 1997, Ray J quickly rose to fame with hit singles like “One Wish,” “Another Day in Paradise” and “What I Need” but nothing compared to the headlines he made in 2007 when a sex tape with his former girlfriend, Kim Kardashian, was released to the world.
As Kim and her family became household names with the debut of their reality television series, the same can’t be said for Ray J who released his last studio album in 2008. Grasping for any amount of publicity he could find, he even starred in his own reality dating show in 2009 on VH1 but nothing could beat the Kardashian curse. Although the rapper has tried to sue the Kardashians for $500 million by saying, “I made y’all famous,” he’s no longer even a blip on the their radar.
#8 – Blac Chyna
Born as Angela Renee White in Washington, D.C., the 27-year-old model is better known as Blac Chyna, a former exotic dancer who earned the reputation as a “music video vixen.” First put on the map when she was mentioned in Drake’s “Miss Me” hit in 2010, Chyna landed a few magazine covers before being cast as a stunt double in Kanye West’s “Monster” music video alongside Jay Z and Nicki Minaj. Shortly after, Chyna started dating rapper Tyga (who we’ll get to next) in 2011 and spent the next three years raising their son, King.
Engaged in 2012, things turned south for Chyna in 2014 when Tyga started dating Kylie Jenner, the youngest of the Kardashians. Launching an epic feud with the family, the Kardashians bash Chyna every chance they get while Chyna has managed to get the last laugh after locking lips with Robert Kardashian, Jr. in January 2016. With both Rob and Chyna ostracized from the family, the two make the perfect pair and recently announced their engagement on Instagram that is sure to leave the Kardashians boiling in a fit of rage.
#7 – Tyga
As we promised, next on our list is Blac Chyna’s ex-fiancé, Tyga. Signing a recording contract with Young Money Entertainment in 2011, the 26-year-old Tyga has had several hits like “Rack City,” “Faded” and “Still Got It” that left many to believe he was a rising star in the rap industry. Unfortunately, Tyga’s reputation has taken a huge hit with many of his fans since he broke off his engagement with Chyna in 2014 and started dating Kylie Jenner who was only 16 years old at the time.
Today, it’s hard to hear one of Tyga’s songs without glaring reminders of his relationship, which fans love to remind him about on social media. To make matters worse, Tyga’s relationship with the now 18-year-old Kylie has done little to inspire any new music as he has only seen one song make it to the Top 70 on the charts since the two got together in 2015. If that’s not a telling sign, maybe Chyna’s feud with the Kardashians as well as the other stories on our list will be more than enough to save him from the Kardashian curse.
#6 – Bruce (Caitlyn) Jenner
Taking home the 1976 Olympic decathlon title and becoming one of the most celebrated athletes of the era, Bruce Jenner was considered an “all-American hero” and a celebrity who could be seen on everything from television shows and commercials to even Wheaties cereal boxes. After disappearing from the spotlight for a few years to build his professional career, Jenner rose to fame once again in 2007 when he appeared alongside his wife, Kris Jenner, and their blended family on Keeping Up with the Kardashians.
Soon after the show aired, it became apparent that Kris was in charge of the family and often manipulated Bruce around. His misery in the relationship finally became unbearable and, by 2015, he ended his marriage and announced his identity as a trans-woman who would live his life as Caitlyn. Now recognized as the most famous openly transgender woman in the world, Caitlyn has a reality television show of her own called I Am Caitlyn that outlines the long and twisting road of her life including her time as an integral part of the Kardashian family.
#5 – Brody Jenner
Caitlyn Jenner’s son Brody was a reality star long before any of his other family members made their television debut. Cast in The Princess of Malibu series in 2005 alongside his brother Brandon and friend Spencer Pratt, Brody stuck around the reality television circuit when he started dating Lauren Conrad of The Hills in 2007. Cast on the show by its second season and rekindling the romance with his ex-girlfriend Kristin Cavallari, Brody wrapped up the series and returned to reality television when he joined his family for the eighth season of Keeping Up with the Kardashians.
Rejoining the show to repair his strained relationship with his family, it was quickly apparent that tension with his stepmother, Kris, was beyond repair. By 2015, Brody had long grown tired of keeping up appearances and his family shenanigans when he told reporters, “We live two completely separate lives. And everybody ties us in together as the Kardashians and the Jenners. I mean, Kris and Caitlyn got a divorce, so they’re not even technically my family anymore.” Looks like this Jenner is more than happy to skip the family gatherings after all this time.
#4 – Rob Kardashian
The youngest and only brother to Kourtney, Kim and Khloe is 29-year-old Robert “Rob” Kardashian. Appearing on Keeping Up with the Kardashians at just 20 years old, the pressure of the spotlight took its toll on Rob as his sisters and mother craved for time in front of the camera. Leaving the series and laying low for a few years, Kardashian returned to television in 2011 on Dancing with the Stars where he made it to the finals with his professional partner Cheryl Burke.
Things seemed to be going well for Rob in 2012 when he confirmed his relationship with singer Rita Ora only to announce their breakup two months later in December. Rob then joined Fox’s dating game show The Choice and launched his sock line as he slowly distanced himself from his family. Rushed to the hospital amid rumors of substance abuse and diabetes in late 2015, Rob made even bigger headlines in April 2016 when he announced his engagement to model Blac Chyna after only three months of dating. Despite the Kardashians hating his fiancée, we hope Rob can find happiness once again!
#3 – Scott Disick
Shortly before Kourtney Kardashian became a household name in Hollywood, the socialite started dating Scott Disick in 2006. Bringing her beau along for the crazy reality television ride, Kourtney and Disick’s on-again, off-again relationship was well documented on Keeping Up with the Kardashians and the series’ numerous spin-offs. With the world watching through temporary breakups and rekindled romances, Disick has often been portrayed as a bad partner who drinks too much and doesn’t care about Kourtney or their three children.
Spending much of his adult life in the spotlight and building his reputation in the nightclub scene on the arm of a famed Kardashian, few were surprised when rumors of Disick’s alcoholism proved to be true. Making headlines for his stints in rehab over the last few years, Disick attempted to rekindle his relationship with Kourtney, his daughter and two sons but had little success. Officially separated in July 2015, all Kim has to say about her ex-partner is that “he’s a complete mess.”
#2 – Kim Howe
From celebrities and publicists to basketball stars and football legends, we turn our attention to more serious matters for the second spot on our list – the life of former animal rights activist and actress Kim Howe. In February 2015, Howe was driving along the Pacific Coast Highway when Bruce (now Caitlyn) Jenner prompted a crash that ignited a series of collisions, caused multiple injuries and took Howe’s life. Ironically enough, Howe was one of the Kardashian family’s neighbors in their California gated community.
Only 69 years old at the time of her death, Howe’s stepchildren were outraged when prosecutors refused to file charges against Jenner. As a result, they and a few other drivers involved in the collision filed three civil lawsuits in an attempt to find retribution. Spending over 11 months involved in a lengthy battle, Howe’s stepchildren finally settled their case in January 2016 with only one lawsuit remaining open today. With Jenner’s name still cleared in the accident, the financial details of the settlements have yet to be disclosed.
#1 – Lamar Odom
A two-time NBA Champion and a bronze medalist at the 2004 Olympics, Lamar Odom has achieved quite the level of success on the basketball court. Drafted out of Rhode Island in the first round as the fourth overall pick in the 1999 NBA Draft. Odom played for the Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat and the Dallas Mavericks before ending his career in 2013. His success on the hardwoods, however, is only half the story of his incredible journey to stardom.
Meeting Khloe Kardashian in September 2009, Odom shocked his family and friends when he tied the knot with Khloe a month later. Odom joined Khloe on Khloe & Lamar in 2011 but soon discovered he wasn’t cut out for reality television. Opting out of filming and spiraling out of control after their divorce, Odom’s drug and alcohol abuse nearly cost him his life when he was found unconscious at Nevada’s Love Ranch in 2015. Spending days in a coma and suffering several strokes, Odom is now on the road to recovery leaving many to believe that the Kardashians will soon find a way to cash in on his journey back to health.
